Chilly temperatures and soaring gas prices can easily convince people that they'll use space heaters to supplement their home or apartment building's heating system.

Space heaters are great for just that - supplemental heat. The danger, however, is when even the most responsible types decide to use a space heater as a primary source of heat.

That's rarely a good idea for two reasons. The first is safety. Despite a number of safety advances - both required by the government and imposed thanks to industry self-regulation - it's still never a good idea to depend on space heaters for a majority of your warmth.

The second reason is efficiency. Most space heaters that run off household electrical current, if used as the primary heating unit - will probably end up costing you as much in electricity as you would have paid in gas or oil.

There are places and situations for which a space heater is ideally suited. The first and probably the most popular is the bathroom. Even if the rest of your house is comfortable, stripping down to step in the shower or bath can be chilly, so it's naturally more efficient to heat that space a little more. Another place they can come in handy is chilly basements or other rooms that just don't seem to get very warm.

There are dozens of small space heaters out there, but make sure that the one you buy has several important features. The first is a certification from a recognized testing laboratory like Underwriters Laboratories Inc. This certification means the heater has been tested under a variety of conditions and meets the lab's standards for safety and performance.

The second is a thermostat that will turn the unit off when the desired temperature is reached. This keeps the room from getting too hot and will also help conserve energy. Many units now also come with “auto-off” functions that cut the current if the heater is tipped over.

If you intend to use a space heater where it might get wet, such as in a bathroom, look for a unit specifically designed for such an area. Still, keep the heater clear of tubs, showers, sinks or any other place that may cause the heater to get wet.

Another important feature to consider is the heating element and what protects it. Many units now feature ceramic heating elements, which stay warmer longer and don't glow red like the toaster-looking coils in older models. The guard should keep children and pets from reaching into the unit or even sticking part of a finger inside.

For more information on what to look for (and avoid) in space heaters, go to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Space Heater Safety page at www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/pubs/463.html.

Office Modular

Modular sales office with a Southern flair by pac-van

Late last week, I posted a top-10 list of things Microsoft did right during fiscal year 2010, which ended on June 30. With every right there must come a wrong. What will surprise some readers is how some actions fit into both categories. A number of “wrongs” on this list also appear on my “did right” list but put into different context. With that introduction, during fiscal 2010, Microsoft wrongly:

1. Revamped its cloud computing strategy. Azure debuted a month late and a whole vision short. In 2008, Microsoft Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie laid out a startling and potentially revolutionary cloud computing vision. Developers would write to the datacenter much as they did to the desktop operating system. I likened the approach to an operating system in the sky — to a truly cloud OS.

But Azure turns out to be something much different, and not because Microsoft mismanaged the project like Windows Vista. Clearly something else changed. The Office and Windows hawks beat out the cloud OS doves. Azure is now more like a cross between Amazon cloud services and hosted Microsoft everything else, as the company seeks to extend its Office-Windows-Windows Server applications stack to the datacenter. Microsoft had a chance to do something quite revolutionary with Azure. The revolution is now nothing more than a resolution to protect the status quo.

No. 1 is the “wrong” of No. 1 (”launched Azure”) and No. 2 (”revamped its cloud computing strategy”) from the “did right” list.

2. Backed away from interoperability as an enterprise priority. Haven't you noticed that Microsoft beat the interoperability drum much less loudly — often not at all — during second half fiscal 2010? In No. 3 of the “did right” list, I called the interoperability rollback “a smart approach.” It's also a mistake. Most enterprises won't soon abandon non-Windows software. Interoperability will matter to them, but it's no longer as important to Microsoft.

The revamped cloud computing strategy connects to a bigger push to establish a tighter integrated applications stack, of which there are five pillars: Azure, Internet Explorer 9, Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. The stack is more modular in that an enterprise might choose to build the stack from the cloud data center rather than Windows Server. I presume Microsoft executives are betting the integrated cloud stack will pull some enterprises away from Linux. Integration will define fiscal 2011, as it already started to during FY2010.

3. Killed KIN. There are no words to appropriately describe the KIN debacle. Less than two months after Verizon started selling KIN, Microsoft officially killed the smartphone. The move was wrong for so many reasons: Public relations, carrier relations, customer relations, developer relations, manufacturer relations (Sharp made the smartphone), branding, marketing (Microsoft ran a TV ad campaign when killing KIN), employee morale and financial and resources investment. The move also unravels confidence that Microsoft can deliver in Windows Phone 7 a game-changing platform and supporting strategy.

4. (Unofficially) fired J Allard and Robbie Bach. This one is No. 4 on the “did right” list, too. Entertainment and Devices division has demonstrated vision when other Microsoft groups clung to Office, Windows and Windows Server. E&D broke the chains that demanded new products be tied to twin monopolies Office and Windows. The Allard and Bach departures signal that the Office and Windows hawks killed yet more breakaway doves (not just the cloud dreamers). Timing is terrible as Microsoft seeks to recover massive lost momentum in the mobile market, where upstarts Apple and Google are screeching butt kickers.

Allard and Bach are visionaries lost, and their departures signal that a renewed Office and Windows tunnel vision has returned (See #1 and #2). For other closeted Microsoft visionaries, the departures can only be morale sapping. Who now will dare come out of the closet and admit their true developer lifestyle orientation isn't Office or Windows?

5. Announced volume licensing changes. For years, Microsoft has used extras to justify raising annuity licensing fees during the early Naughties. Now the great software giant is preparing to take away one of the most obviously tantalizing benefits — discounted to free software for employees. The actual change is months away, but the announcement came during fiscal 2010.

To be clear, Microsoft is ending the Employee Purchase Program but not the Home Usage Program for Office. Microsoft claims much less interest in EPP, which is reason enough to keep the program. If demand has lessened, Microsoft loses little by keeping something rather than taking it away. It's better customer relations to give, or at least keep, something rather than take it away.

6. Launched Office 2010 without adequate marketing support. Microsoft put some real advertising muscle behind Bing, Windows 7 and more recently Internet Explorer 8. The adoption rates tell a story of successful marketing. But behind Office 2010, Microsoft has taken its more typical subdued approach. Yes, there are Web ads (yawn) but what major magazine, newspaper or TV marketing is there? Early US retail Office 2010 sales are “disappointing,” according to NPD. Office 2010 isn't that apparently different from version 2007. How will potential customers know the differences, and more importantly the benefits, if Microsoft doesn't sell them? Advertising sells. Non-marketing smells.

7. Withheld financial guidance. Starting in January 2009, Microsoft stopped giving financial guidance to Wall Street. It was simply a disastrous decision that established an even worse precedent. Sure, the guidance couldn't be good (given sagging sales) and risked further run on the stock, as if the last quarter of 2008 wasn't bad enough for Microsoft and nearly every other public company. But bad guidance would have been better than none. Successful public companies don't just manage finances, they manage perceptions about their performance.

Microsoft had a chance to resume guidance with start of fiscal 2010, in July 2009, but failed to. By withholding guidance, Microsoft let uncertainty and gossip determine perceptions about its sales and earnings performance. By comparison, Apple continued to release guidance and, combined with marketing and product launches and leaks, generates positive perceptions. These perceptions helped to lift Apple's share price to new heights during Microsoft's FY2010. Meanwhile, Microsoft shares remain in the doldrums, even while quarterly results set new records. Given fiscal fourth quarter's smashing results, there is simply no reason for Microsoft not to offer Wall Street guidance during fiscal 2011.

8. Failed to buy Palm. In December 2009, I gave 10 good reasons why Microsoft should buy Palm. Microsoft's failure to seize the opportunity led to a bidding war (which included Apple) that ended with HP buying Palm. HP was Microsoft's principle Windows tablet partner and a major Windows mobile licensee . Suddenly HP is a mobile competitor. A Microsoft Palm acquisition would have instantly given Microsoft's renewed mobile strategy a jumpstart. Now Microsoft struggles on two mobile fronts — smartphones and tablets.

In a startling trend, four of the top 10 smartphone vendors in second quarter predominately shipped Android handsets, according to IDC. These vendors had 100 percent year-over-year growth rates. As for tablets, Apple shipped 3.2 million units in the launch quarter, encroaching on a category Microsoft had been trying to build up for nearly a decade. The point: Mobile competition is stiffer than ever, and Microsoft needed something in fiscal 2010; Palm could have been it.

9. Cut search deal with Yahoo. Last year, I called the agreement “Google's Christmas-in-July present.” As recent ComScore numbers show, Microsoft doesn't need Yahoo all that much. Microsoft argues that combined scale will help improve Bing search and gain share against Google. But Bing advertising already has significantly improved Microsoft search share, which rose from 8.4 percent in June 2009 — the first full month Bing TV spots aired — to 12.7 percent in June 2010. Combined Microsoft-Yahoo search share would be more than 31 percent, or about half of Google. While the numbers are seemingly good, the Yahoo deal:

  • Initially costs Microsoft more than it financially gains
  • Imposes logistically difficult integration hampering search platform advancement and acquiring new ad customers
  • Distracts the company from the more important priority of expanding its mobile advertising platform efforts

10. Let Don Dodge and Chris Liddell get away. Liddell proved to be an exceptionally adept Microsoft CFO. He managed Microsoft finances in better times and bad, doing a resoundingly good job overseeing difficult cost cutting as global economic crisis sapped software sales. Liddell has an excellent relationship with Wall Street analysts. There is simply no excuse for Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and his board of directors letting Liddell leave for General Motors. No incentive should have been enough to keep him, although given Liddell's tight-fisted financial operations during the econolypse, as CFO he might not have allowed it. How ironic is that?

Dodge, Microsoft's ambassador to Silicon Valley, was the most surprising of the company's fiscal 2010 layoffs. Microsoft lost three things with Dodge:

  • Vital experience sussing out good startups
  • Someone well respected in Silicon Valley
  • An ally, who became a competitive enemy

In mid November 2009, less than two weeks after being laid off by Microsoft, Dodge took a job with Google. How the frak did Microsoft executives not see that one coming?

Late last week, I posted a top-10 list of things Microsoft did right during fiscal year 2010, which ended on June 30. With every right there must come a wrong. What will surprise some readers is how some actions fit into both categories. A number of “wrongs” on this list also appear on my “did right” list but put into different context.

Wagner 905 1,500-Watt On-Demand Power Steamer and Cleaner

See all Miele Canister Vacuum

I confess. I love canister vacs. I don't feel the same way about uprights. I don't like bagless vacuum cleaners, either. In fact, you can read about why I think they're dirty and messy. You're about to learn why I love my Sears Twilight Kenmore CanisterVacuum, and here's why.

Convenience. Portable. Easy to use. Superb cleaning. Tools. Versatile. These are just a few of the words I'd use to describe my Kenmore Twilight Canister Vacuum.

Sears Kenmore Twilight Canister Vacuum Convenience
I'd like to personally thank the makers of this vacuum for the one must-have feature that puts the Sears Twilight Kenmore Canister Vacuum heads and tails above all other canister vacs! The power button is on the HANDLE! No matter where you're standing, you can turn it on or off!

The suction tube is a whopping six feet long, so you can be pretty far from the canister itself and still turn the vacuum on, and off. I love it!

The power cord is 24 feet long. It has a button you can press to make it automatically retract back into the vacuum.

Sears Kenmore Twilight Canister Vacuum Portable. Easy to use.
Coming in at a mere 30 pounds, you might think it's heavy and too hard to move. It's the weight of an average three year old. I haven't seen many people who have problems carrying their three year old for a few minutes now and then.

It's easy to pick up. There's a handle on the front of the canister vacuum. It's so big, you can even see the handle in the picture! The handle on the stick part is big, too, which means it's also easy to pick up move.

There are super big wheels on this canister vacuum, so it moves and turns at the drop of a hat. (Two on the side, one in the front.)

The main handle is easy to remove so you can use the onboard (and hidden) tools to clean mini-blinds, corners, ceiling fans, and more.

It's easy to replace the vacuum bags, too. Just open the main container, lift out the bag that is full, and replace it with a new, empty bag. The hole where dirt accumulates is small enough that when you're changing bags you don't put a ton of dirt and dust back into your clean home! It has HEPA filtration, too.

Sears Kenmore Twilight Canister Vacuum Superb cleaning.
With a 11 amp motor, this canister vacuum has all the suction power you need - and more. There's even a dial that lets you adjust the suction power. Like the power button, it's right near the handle, too!

Sears Kenmore Twilight Canister Vacuum Overall rating
Coming in at a mere $250 (watch for it to be on sale at this price), this mid-price vacuum delivers and THEN some!

It gets a stellar rating of 10 out of 10 stars!

Housecleaning sucks. However, if you are a vacuum fanatic like me, that's not all bad!

I thought I was the queen of clean until I married an off-the-charts neat freak. Now, you could eat off my floors. Hey, sometimes we do!

My cleaning craze has hit new levels. At this moment, I have a family of eight vacuums in my home, and I have named them all. Let me introduce you:

Brenda is my bagless portable vacuum. She sports a retractable cord and plenty of power. My Scandinavian friends tell me her name stands for “blazing sword,” and I think it suits her. Brenda cuts a swath of clean through any clutter.

Uta is an upright vacuum. She also uses replacement bags. In German, her name means “fortunate in battle,” and so she is. Uta and I like to follow our pets around and rid our home of fur, sometimes even before it leaves their bodies!

Candace is a powerhouse canister vacuum. Although she can be a bit unwieldy, I still love her. Candace uses replaceable bags, which can be somewhat hard to find, as she is an older model. Still, she is my old standby for major messes. Her name is Greek for “glowing,” which really more describes my face, after Candace clears the decks in our home!

Georgette is Candace's much older cousin, another canister vacuum. Her home is in the garage, where she helps with automotive detailing and home-repair projects. Her Greek name means “farmer,” and Georgette is particularly well-suited for picking up garden clippings and barn dirt.

The triplets (Patty, Peggy, and Polly) are portable cordless vacuums. Installed in wall chargers, they only come out of the closets to clean. When I fetch them, they are extremely handy and ready to bust any dust bunnies that creep into our abode.

Chase is our most manly shopvac. French for “Hunter,” his name is appropos. Chase and I pursue wet spills and major crud. During stormy months, we chase flooding waters in the unfinished sections of our basement.

What a wonderful addiction!

I must be the only person in the tri-county area who has to compile a written shopping list, just to go out and buy replacement bags for all my vacuums.

Having tried and used just about every brand and design of vacuum known to mankind, I have some rather strong opinions about things vacuumary. (OK, so I just made that word up.)

Pros and Cons of Bagless Vacuums

Bagless vacuums are usually a lot cheaper than their bag-using counterparts. They also tend to be lighter and more portable. Many are cordless as well. These are simple and convenient devices for sucking up small messes and zipping quickly through the house before unexpected guests arrive.

Here's the main drawback: You actually have to open the machine and dump all that debris into the trash. This can be a messy procedure. Usually, by the time you have cleaned out the receptacle, you will have to vacuum again.

If anyone in your home suffers from dust allergies, you will likely opt for a bagged vacuum. Emptying that debris receptacle in a bagless unit simply stirs up too much dist.

What about bagged vacuums?

Bagged vacuums are usually more powerful machines. Power spells suction, which is essential for any substantial cleaning. These machines may be heavier, although newer models are streamlined and quite manageable.

Wait! There's a catch! Bags must be replaced fairly often. Each vacuum model calls for a specific bag style. These are not expensive, but you will need a continuing supply. Most can be purchased at discount stores (WalMart, Target, etc.), if the stores carry your model of vacuum. You can also purchase bags online.

However, if you have a fancy brand (Kirby, Electrolux, etc.), then you may have to obtain replacement bags through your representative or dealer. Most offer home delivery. This provides your savvy salesperson with the opportunity to demonstrate their latest whiz-bang products for you, the captive audience, when they bring you your replacement bags. Be careful, or you may wind up purchasing a carpet shampooer or other equipment!

Here's the basic dirt:

Basically, if you want portability, choose bagless. If you want power, pick bagged.

If you want flexibility for quick convenience and deep cleaning, why not buy both? Grab a cheap, portable bagless unit (like a hand-held vacuum) and a heavy-duty corded workhorse. Don't forget to pick up some replacement bags. You'll need them!

Now, grab your vacuum, and repeat after me: Housecleaning sucks! Hooray!

Cheap Vacuum

When it comes to quality the Electrolux EL6988D Oxygen3 canister vacuum cleaner seems like an “unstable” product. I've heard so many complaints about this vacuum breaking apart just after six month and at the same time other owners of this same model say just how sturdy and dependable this model is. It made me think that maybe there's a problem somewhere in Electrolux's Quality Control department.

If you're not sure about whether you should buy this canister vacuum or not just read the pros and cons discussed in this article and decide afterwards.

Pros

Out of the box this canister need some assembly but it is a snap since the pieces can be connected easily. After you turn it on you can see that the suction power is very good. Dust, crumbs, dirt, hair and whatever little stuff you have on your carpet will be sucked in easily. Even when you are only using half of its max power the suction is really powerful.

Despite its high power this nice looking vacuum is very quiet so if everyone is watching TV and you want to do some quick cleanups they won't complain at all.

If you or someone in your home has allergy this vacuum would be a big help since it is already using HEPA H12 filtration system. HEPA filtration can capture 99.97% of fine dust and allergens down to 0.3 microns. You can be sure that most of the allergens floating around you will be trapped by the filter and it will stay there. The HEPA filter is washable and it will last for at least 2 years.

The other good things about this vacuum is that the buttons are hand-controlled instead of foot-controlled, sturdy power head, light to help you vacuum in the dark and a low profile which makes it easy to vacuum under furniture and bed.

Cons

The bag for this canister is too small. For daily household use it will fill up quickly. But since the bags are cheap and easy to find this point is more like a neutral instead of a bad point (I'll let you be the judge here).

Now, this is where things are getting “interesting”. On some unit the attachments fall off easily. Making them securely attached to the hose is really difficult. On the other hand the attachment for the rug is too-securely attached to the hose so when you want to pull them off it would almost break. However, these problems are not consistent. So if lady luck is on your side you may never experience these at all.

Conclusion

When you buy this canister vacuum there's a 50-50 chance that you will get an excellent product. If you like to take the bet then go ahead and buy it. But if you prefer a higher chance of getting the best vacuum for your hard-earned money you should continue looking for a better one. Most stores sell the Electrolux EL6988D Oxygen3 canister vacuum in the $420 range and there are a lot of better alternatives out there for that amount of money.
