I have sevier GERD a Hyadas hernia and spastic esophogus. My esophogus was very irritated and I was in the hospital twice thinking I was having a heart attack. Kiri a Portrait : Kiri te Kanawa: Seit den 1970er-Jahren steht dieser Name für makellos reinen, wundervoll timbrierten Gesang. Nun wird die in Neuseeland geborene Sopranistin 60 Jahre alt, und Decca widmet ihr aus diesem Anlass eine Porträt-Doppelbox mit Auskoppelungen aus zahlreichen ihrer Alben.
Von Bach bis Frederick Loewe, von Mozart bis Heitor Villa-Lobos reicht das Spektrum des vorgestellten Repertoires und spiegelt die Vielseitigkeit der Jubilarin wieder. Aber Achtung: Wer nach frühen Aufnahmen von ihr sucht, wird hier so gut wie gar nicht fündig, denn kaum einer der Tracks wurde vor 1980 eingespielt. Einzige Ausnahmen: Die große Micaëla-Arie aus Bizets Carmen mit Produktionsdatum 1976 und der fünfte Satz aus Johannes Brahms’ Requiem, produziert 1979; zwei Dokumente, die besonders eindrucksvoll von der einzigartigen Qualität dieses Stimmmaterials zeugen.
Am Ende des auf diesen CDs abgedeckten Zeitraums steht u. a. Victor Herberts (1859-1924) “Art Is Calling For Me” aus The Enchantress (produziert 1994), ein Song aus der amerikanischen Musical-Comedy-Tradition, anhand dessen die andere Seite von Kiri te Kanawas Begabung, ihr komisches Talent, hervorragend zur Geltung kommt. Ohne den Boden des klassischen Gesangs zu verlassen, bedient sie sich hier einer viel direkteren, nicht so sehr auf süffige Rundung des Tons zielenden Stimmgebung, die vor dem Hintergrund dieses Repertoires ebenso ihren Reiz hat wie ihr edel-gepflegter, bisweilen — das sei nicht verschwiegen — ein wenig zu glatter klassischer Gesang.
In diesem Punkt liegt Kiri te Kanawas einziges von Kritikern immer wieder einmal angesprochenes Problem: Ihre Darbietungen sind nicht immer ein Musterbeispiel an interpretatorischer Durchgestaltung auf der Ebene des Wort-Ton-Bezugs. Allzu gern verlässt sie sich oft auf die bezaubernde Wirkung ihrer Stimme als solcher. Aber, genug gemeckert: Müsste sie, wie so mancher ihrer Kollegen, vokale Mängel durch Ausdruck überbrücken, dann würde sie uns weit weniger Freude machen. –Michael Wersin
