If you are the beginner in computers, probably, you are interested in what hardware is and how it differs from the computer software. Better to say, the physical equipment is everything that allows the software to function. Besides, a covering of such components as keyboards, mice, the program disks and books, the equipment will include all “the mechanical, magnetic, electric and electronic components, making for your system”. Power units, floppy-disks, digital video-disks, flesh-disks, cables, wires and audio-components are considered as “gland” for use of computers.

The computer equipment includes all sorts of the devices that allows grasping and data storage which carry out operations or series of operations on this data or which make the control of results. Computer programs, on the other hand, are any of computer-containing or external programs and databases. Computers usually are sold with already loaded operative and some functional programs when you buy them.

In the equipment, there is a huge variety from which it is possible to choose. For example, the keyboard can be standard, with or without accessories to the numerical keyboard, they can be divided or of other ergonomic design. External disks of accessories are accessible in many possibilities and the sizes. Flesh-disks are accessible in a storage range.

What is the computer equipment? It is all you can see and touch (outside), and internal physical components, such as a parent payment or supplying mechanisms. Compare it with your thoughts in comparison with your brain.

There is well visible equipment including your central processor (CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT), stereo speakers, the monitor, the mouse, the screen, cords and the rug for the mouse. These are making actual units. Remote terminal units (equipment rooms) will be your diskettes, a hard disk, and the disk drive of flexible disks, CD, DVD disks and operative memory (RAM) boards. Some of them are demountable and / or can be the general and by mail. Sockets USB, parent payments, modems and routers are considered also as the computer equipment.

The computer equipment and the software are rather developed and protected materials. The operating system evolved together with computers which will be used with ease of the majority of operators. What use for filling of the whole buildings now can sit in a lap! The big systems are created for commercial, business and the governmental use.

There is one more situation to recognize, and this is the use of the external equipment, located not on your computer. Here where you have bought, for example, a web site of the accepting company, and you use their equipment to remote access from the computer through the Internet. You rent a place on the computer; benefit from use of their equipment, hardware and the software is much more expensive and difficult, than at home. It well works if it is necessary, for web design, storage of a backup copy of the data, and from a data storage place.

Today they are everywhere - the “mighty” computers. It makes no difference if you need them for game or job or for serious industrial processes, in any case the computer hardware must be top quality.

However the computer hardware is naturally flooded with all types of offers. That is why it’s
crucially important to visit this blog and read computer hardware tips that will assist you to choose great stuff for your PC.

Thank you so much The Great guys at - DVD Storage Rack

I know that using the TV as a babysitter is not going to win me “Parent of the Year,” but there are moments where there just aren’t a lot of other options. To be fair to myself, I don’t actually own a television and haven’t for well over a decade. What I do have though is a laptop and my own personal “Leaning Tower of Pisa” built entirely out of the kid’s DVDs and the empty cases in which they are supposed to be put neatly away. I do my best, but the cases often do far less of a job protecting the movies that came in them than duty as coasters for either my coffee or beer, depending on what time of day you happen to catch me. Either way, provided that a disk remains relatively scratch free, popping one in will buy me about a half hour of productivity as Short Stack and Lulu Belle learn about something wholesome and educational. Thus far, I haven’t mistaken a Miffy DVD for say… The Guns of Navarone or Big Trouble in Little China, but I could see that happening eventually. THAT will be a fun time to explain.

Being the Christmas Season and I, being a sucker for the trappings thereof, I’ve been slowly tarting up the house with the trapping of the Holiday. It’s something that I get form my Mom and though the gene isn’t as strong with me as it is with her, it’s there nonetheless. Her house is always decorated like something out of a children’s book and it was magical to watch the transformation happen as a child. As a kid, I just assumed that everyone’s Mom went bonkers with the seasonal decorations and cookie making. I’ve since learned that’s not the case, so I do what I can with my own meager attempts to carry the torch for the sake of my own children’s holiday memories. The DVD that the kids were now successfully glued to gave me the chance I needed to do some rooting in the boxes that lurked in darker corners beneath the house.

Let me explain my house, just briefly. It’s small. No. It’s VERY small. We have exactly one closet in the entire structure and that is crammed to the bursting point with coats and boots. When we moved in here seven years ago, it was only a summer camp with no pretensions of being anything but that. It sat on posts and scoffed at the notion of insulation. I’ve spent the last seven years and a wheelbarrow full of cash changing all that. We now mostly have insulation in the walls and ceilings, but most importantly enough, we also have a basement. A FULL basement that is about seven and a half feet high at its shortest and nearly nine and a half at its highest.

It is also, do to the lack of storage anywhere else in the house, packed to the point of horror/hilarity. Finding anything down there requires persistence, the ability to balance on one foot for extended periods of time and very strong arms so you can carefully tilt four stacked boxes at once so you can peek into the fifth one. This can often result in something that Action Girl and I refer to as a “stuffalanche.”

With the few moments I had and the baby monitor turned up all the way and clipped to my belt, I moved boxes and totes in an effort to find a missing piece in my Christmas preparations. I didn’t find it, naturally, but as is often the case when I go spelunking through boxes of odds and ends, long forgotten, I did find something else that made me stop cold.

A rapidly disintegrating cardboard box spilled its contents at my feet, and among the old pay stubs, bank statements and notes to my self to do things in 2006, I saw a red binder.

My red binder.

THE red binder.

Once, I had a business that was based some distance from my house. It was a drive to get there and though it was hell on my car and the gas I burned up was impressive, it did give me one thing that I don’t really have any more. Solitude. I’d leave in the morning for work and since Action Girl works mostly night shifts, she’s be too groggy to be calling me as I drove on my commute. Content to leave the radio off, I’d spend that time in my car just letting my mind wander and observe things as I whipped by. It was a very nice way to start the day, to be honest.

One day as I trundled along the highway, I started to compose a little poem in my head. By the time I made it to work, I had worked most of it out and was pretty happy with it. Once my coat was hung up and the lights turned on, I sat down and scribbled it on a bit of lined paper. The next day, I did it again. Then again. I really grew to enjoy what quickly transformed into a morning ritual, and though I did not write something everyday, I did put my mind to it pretty often. By the end of the year, I had quite a little pile of prose. I’m hardly the one to judge its quality in the world of poetry, but it was good to me.

At some point, I got concerned about the scraps of paper with all that work and thinking poured onto them and decided I needed to transfer it all to my computer. I put them all in a red binder and brought them home. Then we lifted the house and the binder disappeared.

Normally, I’d not be too concerned about this. My attitude about these things tends to be, “Hey, it’s got to be here somewhere.” and I’m usually correct. This time though, I was worried. Very worried. After the house was picked up, had a basement put in and plopped back down on it’s new underpinning, my Father-in-law had come over and “helped” This is a dangerous thing. Though he has a good heart and the nervous industry that most twenty year old do not, he also has a very bad and well earned reputation for throwing things out that do not belong to him or that no person in their right mind would toss, all without clearance from the owner. Here I’m thinking about the bag of nuts and bolts that held my table saw bench together. No joke.

Long after the visit, I discovered that he had “helpfully” cleaned up an area in the house that, though I admit it, was knee deep in… stuff and debris, it also contained my binder of poems. It had been hastily put there with everything else during the house construction and was going to be dealt with… later… whenever that would be. When I looked at the spot now, it was empty. I knew he had also been to the dump at least twice during his time here. My heart sank. I never asked him if he saw it. I didn’t want him to feel guilty for only trying to help.

I actually wrote one last poem about my book of poetry moldering away under piles of trash at the city landfill, and then I didn’t write again. For whatever reason, the spirit to write poetry just sort of went dormant for me. I tried here and there over the years, but it just didn’t flow like it did before. Not having the commute to quietly reflect anymore, no doubt was a major impact, but thinking of a year’s worth of writing, gone for good also killed the joy.

With a lightning fast snatch that would have caught a fish by surprised, I grabbed it with both hands before it disappeared once again. Eye’s wide, I fearfully examined the open edge of the binder to look without really looking. I had other red binders like this one. It could easily be filled with receipts or old product information, long since irrelevant. No. It wasn’t that.

A smile spreading across my face, I opened it up to see sheet after sheet of hand written thoughts and personal observations. A year’s worth of thinking and writing. I scanned quickly and then snapped it shut and hugged it to my chest, eyes held tight.

“Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” was all I could say.

The little spy speaker on my waist told me that the show upstairs was coming to an end and thus too, my ability to remain here any longer. Holding the long lost binder under my arm, I headed back to the living room where Short Stack immediately burst into a long and accurate description of the show they just watched as Lulu Belle scurried off in search of a lucky stuffed animal with whom to have tea. I listened with half an ear as I made a new home for my memories in a safe and easy to remember location upstairs.

I still have a lot of Christmas-ing to do around the house and that’s the main priority for me, but it will be over soon as well. Once it is, and the kids are tucked into bed, I have some transcribing to do. I don’t know what is in store for me present-wise this Christmas, but I’m already as happy as I could be. What was lost is found and with the distance of time, I’ll be reading these again with new eyes as I type away in the night.

Merry Christmas to me!

I am distraught.

Ikea have discontinued their Flarke bookcase. I was planning on buying eighteen of them for my new flat. One a week, for the bargain price of £14.99 each, until all the walls in my flat were clad in Flarke bookcases. But alas, they've been discontinued after I have amassed only one.

I wanted just matching bookcases, and whilst Ikea have many different ones, the Flarke is the only full height one I can fit in my car.

I'm very conscious of the price of petrol, vastly inflated by tax and fuel duty, so I have a very small and fuel efficient car, the Smart car. The Ikea Flarke bookcase is the only full size one that will fit in my car, that is, would have fitted in my car before it was discontinued.

Now buying eighteen bookcases may have been an insane plan, but it was inoffensive and achievable. And I reckon I could easily fill them all.

Here, this is my one sole Ikea Flarke bookcase.

The top shelf is populated with rock biographies, the next shelf down has fiction, then graphic novels, then novelty books that family buy me for Christmas and birthdays and books what I have written myself and finally the bottom shelf has non-fiction.

I reckon across the the country I have another three large boxes full of books in various storage facilities and then there's the matter of my CD, vinyl, cassette tape, DVD, VHS and reel tape collections which would look just grand on bookcases. I reckon to keep interior designers happy I could have put in a few ornaments, house plants and loudspeakers on the bookcases too.

But alas, this will now be very difficult. I have no larger vehicles to transport larger bookcases, I have no money to hire a larger vehicle and purchase a job lot of bookcases. My bookcase dreams have died.

I was distraught wandering round Ikea. Their cheapest sofa is the Klobo at only £89.99, to make up for the loss of my dream I thought to buy it, as a step up from sitting on cardboard boxes, but then I realised it was also too big to fit in my car, not to mention I can't afford it.

Stress is an everyday word and a big part of our lives, but maybe no time is it more so than during the holidays. There are; extra events and activities to attend, family and friends visiting, extra household duties, and of course extra things to buy and not extra money to spend. All of these things add up to one thing - extra stress added to your everyday life. Before the holiday whirlwind begins is the best time to remember what relieves stress in your life as well as how to manage stress when you encounter it and are too busy to handle it. You may even find a few new tips or tricks for relieving stress.

Here are some reasons why stress occurs, what you can do to prevent it and how it affects you and your life, as described and observed by a licensed social worker and family counselor.

The recipe for stress is equal parts time limits, money and relationships, thrown in a dash of worry and guilt, and sprinkle liberally with self doubt before allowing to “stew.” For special events top it off with holidays, family visits, unreasonable expectations and you have one great big meltdown, especially during the holidays.

The top three reasons for stress in our life are time, money and relationships, states Diane Lamberson, Family Counselor and Licensed Social Worker. First, many people and families experience stress day to day because: after having a family you no longer are able to do what you want when you want it. You are no longer on your own schedule, but on the family schedule and usually your needs and wants come last and the children's and everyone else's needs come first. Secondly, money or the lack of it causes stress. Once you have children you have all those additional expenses of diapers, formula, clothing, doctors, medicine - the list goes on and on. There may be even more stress regarding money if one of the parents has quit their job in order to be a stay at home parent, thus losing a second income. Add the expenses of the holidays and money becomes a one of the most significant stresses of you life, says this counselor. Add to these events the lack of time to spend with your spouse and you have the ultimate mix of stressful situations in your life. According to Ms. Lamberson, studies have shown that the highest level of dissatisfaction during marriage occurs when there are children home during their early years. Parents have little or no time for each other because of the demands placed on them by the family or their career.

With all these demands, it is not unexpected that people would then experience worry and guilt over their actions and decisions. As parents and partners we look at our decisions and the stress we are experiencing and try to second and third and fourth guess ourselves wondering if we have been and are making the right decisions. As a result, we are then attacked by self doubt which increases our stress level as we think that maybe we are doing things all wrong and we need to change our methods or decisions.

The important thing to do when these attitudes are insidiously creeping into our lives is to note that hindsight is always 20/20. You can always look back and wonder if your decisions are the correct ones, with all the experience you have since that decision to back it up. But since you can't change that decision you must learn to go forward. Concentrate on those things that you can change. Remember that there are many people who have it much worse than you do and be thankful for what you do have and the ability to make choices. It is a luxury that many people do not have.

Stress is not always a “bad” thing. Stress has its good points and its bad points. It is the bad points that we must try to reduce from our lives and not allow them to take control. With good stress you may be more productive; with bad stress you may have any one of a number of effects on your physical and emotional well being. The most obvious and well known negative effects of stress, according to Ms. Lamberson are increased anxiety and fatigue, loss of libido, frustration, illness, heart disease, high blood pressure, weakened immune system, trouble sleeping and emotion eating which can lead to weight gain and depression.

What are some things that can affect your ability to handle stress? In many cases your personality can affect your ability to handle stress. So called “Type A” personalities may become stressed to a higher degree because of their need to achieve a high level of perfection and productivity in both their personal and professional lives. The time of the day can also affect your ability to handle stress. Know when your “witching hour” is. What is the witching hour? It is that hour when everything crashes in on you, for many people it is that hours between 5:30-7:30 p.m. with the demands of family, dinner, baths, homework and everyone needing something from the other.

To reduce the amount of stress in our lives we also need to have some insight into our own character. First, reduce those expectations for the holidays, or everyday for that matter. One of my favorite movies for the holidays is National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, with Chevy Chase. His expectations were monumental. Biggest tree, most elaborate spread, gifts for one and all and the ultimate gift of a pool for his family. After everything falls apart and all the guests want to run screaming from the home, Chevy says, “Oh no, your not leaving, we are all staying right here and we are going to have a Hap Hap Happy (blank) Christmas.” Sometimes that may be how it feels, that no matter what we are going to have the holiday we imagine, instead of the holiday we can truly enjoy.

Recipe for reducing your stress is one part each of these ingredients - all are optional or be your own chef and create your own:

Make a to do list - and don't' stress about getting it done. Think of it as a wish list, not a gotta have it done in the next three hours list. Whatever doesn't get done moves to the next day.

Whenever HALT (hungry, angry, lonely or tired, a phrase coined from the family counselor) comes into play go ahead and take a break. Give the kids a DVD to watch, allow your mother in law to make the pumpkin pie even though yours taste better.

Have a support system. Find friends, neighbors and others you can talk to and share with. Don't worry, they will return the favor.

Find time to do nothing. Spend 10 minutes each day doing nothing, but something for you. If you have to, take a book to the bathroom shut the door and read. No one will know that it's your quiet time.

Spend 15 minutes being silly with your children. Roll around on the floor, play hide and seek, laugh at the funny things that they do. Your children do the most adorable, funny, laughable things; enjoy them while you can.

Say NO. You don't' have to be the cub scout leader, Sunday school teacher, home room mom, booster club vice president, preschool room mom, field trips and bake sale chef. Find a balance and do only those things that provide you with the outlet you need. You will find that it reduces your stress, provides balance, gives back to the community and gives you a sense of pride.

Do only what you NEED to do, not what you think needs to be done, which in most cases is everything.

Try to spend 30 minutes doing physical exercise. Some examples are: grab the Sesame Street DVD about exercise and do it with the kids. Use a get fit tape, do the steps of your house a few times, take the children for a walk in their stroller, they don't know it's for you and my personal favorite - have sex. It's the best stress reliever going.

You may look at these tips and think, I am going to be stressed out, feel guilt, worry and self-doubt as a result of all these things I should be doing to eliminate stress from my life. Remember these are all suggestions, not a comprehensive list of everything you must do. Out of this you can create that one perfect recipe for success in making yourself a little less stressful.

A four-door luxury sedan, the Maybach 57 is produced by Daimler Chrysler. The original Maybach came out in 2002, designed to be a direct competitor with the top Bentley and Rolls Royce vehicles, after Daimler Chrysler failed in their attempt to buy out the other company.

Models

There are two basic versions of the Maybach, the 57 and the 62. The numbers refer to the length of each model. The longer 62 version is designed for the rich, specifically made to be chauffeured, while the shorter 57 model is more likely to be driven by the actual owner. The luxury shows in the price, $332,500.

The Maybach 57 S debuted in 2005. The S stands for “special” and the vehicle does its best to stand up to that. This special version of the Maybach runs around $367,000.

Under the Hood

The Maybach 57 comes standard with a 5.5 L, V-12 turbo engine for some serious moving power. This extreme engine has 543 horsepower and gets just 12-17 miles to the gallon, depending on driving conditions.

A five-speed automatic transmission is the norm in this luxury sedan, with an overdrive feature built-in, which allows for better fuel economy while driving long stretches of highway.

Exterior Features

The exterior of this sleek luxury sedan blends completely with bumpers the same color as the body. It features a front air dam and a rear spoiler for added function and look. The Maybach 57 is available only in black, while the S model comes in black or silver.

Tinted break-resistant windows add to the Hollywood air that surrounds the Maybach 57. It comes with nineteen inch alloy wheels, a heater wiper wash system, plus the windshield wipers detect rain and snow and come on automatically. The headlights automatically switch on at dusk, as well, and there are automatic sunshades in the back.

Interior Features

Driving the Maybach 57 is a great experience for any driver. From the heated steering wheel and five position memory steering column to the trip computer designed to help with navigation, this vehicle is high end. The radio, phone and display controls are positioned for easy manipulation, right on the steering wheel itself.

The interior seating is upholstered in luxurious Napa leather. All four bucket seats offer heating, massages and reclining capability along with lumbar support and power memory positions.

Storage facilities include a lockable glove box and a refrigerated rear console. The Maybach 57 also features a DVD player with LCD screens on the backs of the front seats. Full audio control and headset plug-ins are available in the backseat, so the kids can listen to their music without bothering their parents. Who wouldn't want to stay in this car long after the trip is over?

Security

The security of both car and passenger was important to Daimler Chrysler. The list of anti-theft devices is astounding. They include selective locking and unlocking, valet lockout, a Smart-key card key, and alarm. Also, the car has an anti-lift sensor and engine immobilizer should anyone try to take it without permission.

Safety

Although the Maybach 57 has both front and side airbags, it goes a step further in protecting its occupants. The front airbags are deployed in two stages to prevent injury to the driver and passenger. Weight sensors prevent the release of airbags when a small child is present. Also, there are side airbags in the back seat and special head-cushioning curtain airbags.

Three-point seatbelts, along with seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters add another level of safety. As does the trunk, with it's special device to prevent anyone from being trapped in it.

The Maybach 57 offers Tele Aid, a system that remotely locates the vehicle, as well as provides a variety of services. If you are in an accident, Tele Aid will automatically notify authorities. It also tracks stolen vehicles for rapid recovery and offers an Emergency Response system among other services.

Users suffering from allergies need not worry inside this sedan. There is a built-in filter that keeps out pollen, charcoal and dust for an allergen-free interior.

Fame

The Maybach 57 has a loyal following among celebrities. Madonna and Samuel L. Jackson both share good taste with their Maybachs, while Simon Cowell not only owns one, he also openly bad-mouthed their competition, the Rolls Royce.

I have been a member of Blockbuster Online for around 3 years now. I enjoyed the 3 at a time plan where they would send me 3 DVD/BluRay or HD movies by mail.

The plus side of this subscription was that I could watch these DVD's by mail, and bring them in to Blockbuster for instant free trade ins of rentals. I loved this option because it truly made me, as the customer feel like VIP. While everyone in line before me dug through their purses looking for money, I simply walked up, handed them the DVD by mail sleeves, and walked out with my free rentals.

Once they got the mail ins, they then would automatically send me the next movie on my online que list.

The other thing I enjoyed about this was that they also sent me a game rental coupon VIA email once a week.

Eventually the program I was paying for began to take on subtle changes.

The first change was an enormous increase in money the 3 at a time subscription. Me being the lucky Grandfathered in customer, my monthly bill stood the same. They did however take away my weekly coupon, and now only gave me one coupon a month.

I was a little p-oed at this, but seeing that I still had the option to walk in and exchange my mailers for rentals, I stood with the subscription.

That subscription after tax came to nearly $30.00, which is a bit high.

I continued to enjoy my subscription till recently when they totally did away with the instant trade ins. You see I was still able to drive my mails ins to the store for a trade in, but they would not send me the next movie on my list anymore. Now the movie I rented in the store would be added to my que list!

The thing that really bothered me though was the fact that they did all this without even bothering to tell me. I sort of just figured it out on my own when I went to check my online que.

I thought this was absurd. I was paying quite a pretty penny for this online subscription. For them to combine the rentals with my online rentals was the final nail in the coffin. I kicked Blockbuster to the curb.

I sent the company an email stating that when they get their subscription back to the way it was, when I first signed up, perhaps I would consider coming back to them. After using Netflix though, that's pretty unlikely!

I signed up for Netflix about 2 weeks ago and wanted to kick myself for not signing up sooner.

Before signing up for the 3 at a time plan, I wanted to give the subscription a taste first, and signed up for the 2 at a time program.

Besides being sent 2 DVD's at a time, I could also view a library of movies instantly through my computer, XBOX360, Samsung BluRay Player, or through a convenient little box called Roku!

The price was also cut in half compared to what I would pay for Blockbusters 2 at a time DVD's.

I was so impressed with Netflix that I actually bought myself a Roku box just to watch these instant movies on my TV. I could have used any of the above equipment, but I don't have XBOX Live, or a Samsung Player. For $99.99, the Roku seemed like the most convenient option. Instant movies on my HDTV whenever I wanted, instantly!!!

The movies that come by mail seem to have a 2 day turn around, which is spectacular. With Blockbuster there were times where I found myself waiting up to 5 days.

Besides Netflix being faster with turn around, they also have a much better site to place movies into the que.

With Blockbuster my PC would freeze up, lag, run slowly and just annoy me to the point where I didn't even bother adding movies all that often.

With Netflix everything is set up in a nice, clean, user friendly, manner.

So Which DVD By Mail Subscription Would I Recommend?

Without a doubt, Netflix. Not only are they taking over thanks to their instant movies, but in the near future they have plans to add an instant movie subscription, where every movie you could ever want will be included in their library. As of now the library they have does not include recently released videos. In the future though this is exactly what they will be delivering to customers.

The downward trajectory of Blu-ray player prices matches DVD almost to the dollar—actually, Blu-ray's cheaper. And that's not considering inflation, or that the best players do a whole lot more than Blu-ray. It's not what Blu-ray makers wanted.

Sony was firm for a long time on not dipping below an MSRP of $300 to battle cheap Chinese players, but already by the end of last year, the Chinese manufacturers were losing just as much money as the big guys like Samsung. The chart, using data from the Envisioneering Group in the WSJ article, shows the average price of players for each format in the years following their launch—DVD in 1997, Blu-ray in 2006.

It just stands to reason if we're not going to spend as much time watching Blu-ray as we did DVD—considering all of the other places we can watch video that's easier good enough—we're probably not gonna pay as much for it. As awesome as Avatar may be, I'm not really sure if 3D's gonna change that fact, at least not in our tiny living rooms. [WSJ, Chart Data by Envisioneering Group]

DVD Cabinets Blog post that anyone can read

Thank you so much The Great guys at - DVD Storage Rack

Suddenly realizing that you have a spare bedroom can be overwhelming. Empty space just begs to be filled, and the possibilities are endless. Maybe you’ve just bought a new, larger house, or possibly one of your children has moved away. Whatever the reason, spare rooms are an excuse to get decorating, and deciding on a use is just the first step. Decorating, painting, carpeting, and selecting furniture for a room can be an exciting – if challenging – task. Remember to start small so you don’t give up after a few days, and watch the transformation happen!

Functionality

Perhaps you have always wanted to have your own home office, or a room in which to set up arts and crafts; you should always consider ideas that have been lurking in the back of your mind. The important thing is to get motivated about redecorating, because it will give you the drive you need to finish what you start. If you just want to use it as a place to store junk, then you won’t want to work on it as often as you would an art studio.

If you live alone, then this decision is entirely up to you, but if you live with other family members, then you should seek their opinions before going ahead with plans. Figure out how you can use the spare room so that everyone can enjoy it. And if you know that it might cause an argument among siblings, have everyone give you their suggestions in private.

Practicality

When considering ideas for a spare bedroom, think long and hard about practicality. Factor your budget, your available time, and prospective needs before making a concrete decision. Often, people jump into a project before they have really thought it through, and eventually have to give up on it because it isn’t something that can be accomplished.

For example, if you have kids who want a game room, consider their ages and how long they will use it. Are your kids active in playing games? Do they play well with one another? If all you foresee are arguments over toys, then it isn’t something that you should pursue. There is nothing worse than spending weeks on a project, only to find out that you regret having done it.

You also don’t want to commit to something that is going to end up costing too much. Use your creative genius to think up ways to cut corners on cost so that your newfound project doesn’t wind up breaking the bank.

Possibilities

If you need a few ideas to get the creative wheels spinning, here are some options for turning a spare bedroom into a functional, practical space for everyone to enjoy.

1. Home Office

I mentioned this earlier, and it can be an invaluable convenience. If you work from home quite a bit or if you constantly find yourself messing with the computer, your own private office space will make your life much simpler. Studies have shown that people work much better in a quiet, peaceful atmosphere that reflects their own personality. You can select your desk, chair, artwork, plants, and other furnishings with your personal tastes in mind. Include a CD player so that you can listen to music while you work, and place your desk by the window to offer yourself a view.

Home offices don’t have to be traditional in any sense of the word. Since this is your space, you can organize it however you want. Maybe the kids are constantly getting into your drawers, messing up your carefully organized documents and supplies. In your home office, things will always be as you left them.

This might also give you an opportunity to get the fax machine you’ve been eyeing at the office supply store, or maybe a new color printer where size isn’t an issue. You can have a couch or chairs for occassions when colleagues visit your home, or an extra table where you can spread out your work.

2. Family Room

Perhaps you have always wanted to turn your downstairs living room into a formal sitting area, but you need a place where you can kick back and watch television with your family. The spare bedroom can be an answer to that problem. The only difficult decision is deciding which room to redecorate; do you move the living room furniture to the spare bedroom, or buy new furniture for the family room? The choice is yours!

This can also have a personal touch for your kids. Get them involved when you go shopping and let them help pick out the furniture. Maybe you have sons who are fascinated with super heros, or daughters who love princesses and castles. You can decorate according to everyone’s tastes, and always have a place to relax.

If you or a family member is particularly handy, you might consider building a custom entertainment center for your television, VCR, and DVD player. This can provide extra storage for movies and CD’s, and will give your own personal touch to the room.

3. Reading Room

I don’t know about you, but I love to read, and it would be wonderful to have a room dedicated to my own personal library and a place to relax with a good book. Turn your spare bedroom into a retreat for the mind, with bookcases full of your favorite reading material and plush armchairs perfect for kicking back and letting books carry you away. Decorate in soft pastel colors or bold bright ones – whichever is conducive to relaxation – and exchange miniblinds for curtains to allow for maximum sunlight. You could also have a table so that you can work in private, or a computer desk for when you just want to be alone.

4. Entertainment Room

Are you constantly throwing parties at your house? Do you have guests over two or three times a week, either for business or pleasure? A spare bedroom – depending on the size – is a great place to put couches, chairs, and maybe a television. You can install a bar along one wall if you like to serve drinks, and keep a mini-fridge in the corner to keep things cold. Add the theme of your choice to serve as ambiance, and you have a wonderful new place to entertain guests.

5. Holiday Room

If your family is big on holidays, then you might need a place to put all of your decorations. Sometimes living rooms are too small to hold Christmas trees and everything else that goes along with the holidays, especially if you’re a decorating fanatic. Use the closet to store off-season holiday decorations, labeled neatly in cardboard boxes, and have a new place to display all of your seasonal decorations.

Along the same lines, maybe you have tons of collectibles, and you no longer have enough room to display them. Make your spare bedroom into a theme room, with whatever you collect on shelves or tables all around the room.

6. Arts & Crafts

Are you a painter? A sculptor? Or do you just like to try new things? Set up a table, an easel, and anything else you might need to fascilitate your creative genius, and get right to work on your list of projects. As an added bonus, you can display your work as you finish it, either on shelves or on the walls. It will be a shrine to your artistic talent!

7. Antiques

It seems like every member of my family collects antiques, and sometimes we don’t realize just how many we have! Start your own collection in your spare bedroom using display tables and shelves for your most precious pieces. If can be a room that you privately enjoy, or one that you show off to all of your guests and friends. True collections deserve their own all-inclusive space, after all.

This also works if you are an art connoiseur, and are running out of places to display your favorites. Hang paintings from the wall, stand sculptures on the floor, and lay beautiful rugs on the carpet or hard wood floors

8. Exercise Room

It is one of the most popular New Years’ Resolutions, and most of us complain that we have nowhere to do it! Now you have no more excuses, because your spare bedroom can make a wonderful work-out room. Bring in a TV for exercise tapes, start looking at treadmills, and collect weights for muscle strengthening. You might also want to include a Yoga Mat, a Balance Ball, and a Stretch Rope – to be trendy, if for no other reason!

And if you are into Yoga and Meditation, make your spare bedroom into a meditation room. Surround yourself with calming colors and objects, and let your mat be the center of the room. You can do your Yoga stretches and meditate right after from the privacy of your new room.

9. Spa

Believe it or not, you can have your very own spa right in the middle of your house! Hot tubs can be installed indoors if the plumbing is right, and saunas can be built into closets. This will probably be a very expensive endeavor, but imagine all of the peaceful hours you can spend soaking in your Jacuzzi or sweating toxins in your sauna. Keep a mini-fridge next to the Jacuzzi for drinks while you relax, and install a bar on the wall to hold your towels.

NOTE: Talk with a contractor before beginning this project, and make sure that it can be done according to the layout of your house. Also, if the room is carpeted, you will probably want to think about laying tile instead; you don’t want moldy carpet from drips!

10. Guest Room

I originally planned for only nine ideas in this article, but when I reached the end, I realized that I forgot the most important one: a guest bedroom!

Are you constantly playing host to visiting relatives and friends? If so, create your own B&B inside your home! There might be only one room for rent, and you might not charge guests to stay, but the décor can be just as unique. Choose a luxurious sleigh bed or an elegant four-poster, and include an antique dresser and perhaps a small television for your guests’ comfort. Decorate it however you like, and your friends will always choose to stay with you!

A big thanks to The Awesome people at DVD Storage Rack

Most men hate shopping for themselves, which makes it easy to shop for them on special occasions or holidays. But you don't want to fall into a rut where every holiday you're buying your husband casual and dress shirts, ties, belts, and other traditional menswear gifts. Granted, if they need these items, they would make an ideal holiday gift. But if you're just buying your husband these gifts for lack of other ideas, then why not take a detour from the traditional and check out these suggestions for holiday gifts for your husband.

* Mechanical Watch. Fashion and function tick together with a mechanical watch for your husband. With the watch's moving mechanical gears and springs in full view, it's a great style for men. And according to the fashion experts at ShopNBC, a mechanical watch is one of the hot trends in watches. A mechanical watch combines the beauty of mainsprings, balance assemblies, ornate dial work and watch movements with extreme accuracy and reliability from a quartz movement. Even if your husband already has a casual and/or dress watch, watches are now being worn as a personal statement or to match with various wardrobes, so the more watches your husband has, the better he can accessorize the look of the day.

* CarChip. This is an excellent gift, especially if your husband is on the road a lot or likes to tinker with cars as a hobby. The CarChip is auto data-logger technology and software that monitors what is happening behind the wheel and under the hood. If you get the model with an alarm, it will audibly warn the driver when user-set speed, acceleration and braking limits are being exceeded. The device monitors up to 300 hours of drive time and four of 23 engine parameters at a time. The user can download the data to any PC to get the inside scoop on the car and driver.

* A Wearable Toolbox. If your husband is of the handyman variety and likes to work on odd jobs around the house or on the car, then the Vise-Grip Toolbox Multi-Tool might make an ideal gift for him because it puts the necessary tools literally at his fingertips. That's because the toolbox is compact enough to fit on a tool belt or in a pocket. The Vise-Grip Toolbox Multi-Tool includes seven tools in one: locking pliers, a wire cutter, scraper blade, wire stripper, a Schrade knife blade with a serrated and smooth edge, a reversible screwdriver with a flat head and Phillips head, and a socket that accepts all 1/4-inch power bits.

* Home Theater System. This is an awesome present if your husband like to relax watching movies or listening to classical music. These all-inclusive compact systems include a DVD player that also plays CDs, and a complete set of surround sound speakers.

* Satellite Radio. Satellite radio offers many radio shows that are geared towards men. With a satellite radio tuner, your husband can receive 100 channels of news, sports and entertainment in his car. An accessory home kit is available for listening to satellite radio through a home receiver. Satellite radio tuners are available for XM and Sirius satellite radio providers.

* Hand-Held Global Positioning System. We all know how much men hate asking for directions, so this is a great gift for the husband who fishes, hunts, hikes, or travels a great deal. A hand-held global positioning system (GPS) will help them stay on course and get them to their destination.

* Portable Grill. This is a perfect gift for the husband who is a camper, boater, or enjoys tailgating at the football game. A portable grill allows for cooking on the go and is great to bring on a family picnic or a vacation getaway. Some portable grills use a mini gas tank, but others, like the one from Solaire, uses infrared cooking technology. Whichever method you choose, your husband can cook seafood, chicken, steaks, hamburgers, chops, and just about anything else no matter where he is.

* SmartHome Remote Control. If you want to make life easier for your husband, this is the gift. The remote control is similar to a television remote, except that it can control light and appliances in a single room or the entire house with the touch of a button.

* An Engraved Gift. Your husband will feel special and proud with an engraved gift. Plus he'll always think of you when using it. The choices for an engraved gift are endless. For instance, if your husband is a big baseball fan, consider engraving his name on a Rawlings baseball bat. If he travels a lot for his job, an engraved leather overnight bag would be very practical. If your husband is a golfer, you could get his golf bag engraved, or even golf balls and tees.

* Home Bar Accessories. If your husband likes to entertain, consider adding to his home bar with a selection of glasses and bar accessories. Martini glasses, especially ones that sport unique designs or colored stems, are popular this holiday season. Other bar accessory ideas are cool coasters, shakers, shot glasses, ice bucket with tongs, and liquor bottle dispenser.

* Sports or Special Events Tickets. Here's a way to wow your husband this holiday season. Give him tickets to a sporting event, concert, or live theater performance. Check out the schedules of events in your area and match the event with your husband's interests. You can even add a gift certificate for dinner.

* Grooming Products. Thanks to the television show “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy,” men's grooming is in. Men no longer feel weird about taking care of their skin or hair, so go ahead and pamper your guy with grooming products. Here are some grooming products that you might want to consider for your husband: a shave kit complete with shaving creams, oils, gels, post shave lotion and products for irritated skin; a skin care collection of cleanser, toners, scrubs and exfoliators, moisturizer, anti-aging eye cream and lip protection; or a bath and body collection of shower gels, cleansing bars, body lotions, shampoo and conditioner, and hands and feet lotion.

* Leather Anything. Men love the durability and look of leather. If your husband doesn't already have a leather jacket, chances are he could use one. Other great leather gifts are a sport or duffle bag; a CD visor organizer that attaches to any car's sun visor; briefcase; desk set; sling bag; and golf bag.

* Luxurious Bathrobe. Pamper your husband with a luxurious bathrobe, just like the ones provided in five-star hotels or on cruise ships. There are some great styles on Bathrobes Online (http://www.bathrobes-online.com), ranging from classic to sporty. You can even get a hooded bathrobe for an incredible wrap of luxury.

* Hammock. This is an ideal gift if your husband likes to relax outdoors. Hammocks have evolved from the traditional rope hammock that is tied between two trees. A great choice for your husband is a hammock on a stand, so it can be enjoyed on the lawn or deck. There are also hammock chairs for another option.

Crunchyroll has until recently been a destination site that runs Japanese animation videos and other Asian media content licensed for international audiences. But it’s beginning to create social games as a way to promote this content, with the first one being the only official application for Naruto, a long-running manga and anime series about a young ninja.

The application itself is a straightforward role-playing game. You undertake missions to gain points and access new levels via text-based combat. While the game already includes offers so users can gain virtual currency for buying virtual goods, the bigger play — at least for now — is to try to promote the Naruto brand, as Crunchyroll chief executive Kun Gao tells us. While the company has not yet added direct payments for virtual goods, the app includes very clear integration points with the home site, including the ability to watch videos in order to receive special items.

Crunchyroll has separately cut deals to run 20 anime titles to date. Almost all of the episodes it offers are free, although there are lots of ads on the site for related types of things, such as for Nexon’s Maple Story massive multiplayer online game. For nearly $7 a month, the site’s premium service stops the ads, offers higher-quality video, and gives users access to the content a week before everyone else. The Naruto game itself also includes ads, apparently offered via Google, that link back to Crunchyroll as well as to other social games.

Due to Crunchyroll’s means of monetizing its content, it has almost certainly made some money off the game.

In the two and a half months that its been out on Facebook, Naruto has grown to 558,000 monthly active users and 60,000 daily active users. This is a promising start for the company’s foray into social gaming, especially considering that the game was developed in-house.

Gao explains that the company’s overall goal isn’t just to drive traffic to the home site, though. Because the license-holders for Naruto and other animes are interested in broader promotion — for Naruto merchandise, for example — the game is intended to broadly promote the brand on social networks. “As long as we promote and grow the brand, we and other licensors will make money,” he tells us. “That’s how we view the whole ecosystem.” In terms of specific dollar amounts, Gao only describes its deals as “revenue shares.”

Crunchyroll, he says, is also working on social games for other titles it licenses, and plans to expand its Naruto offering in the future. Because Facebook users have real-world identities, the company can also begin targeting them for games, videos and ads that are more relevant to the interests they show in their profiles and in the games they play. “Before, it was hard to pinpoint the audience, but now you can engage and upsell the whole experience,” he tells us.

For those not familiar, Crunchyroll has been around since 2006. It got its start running unlicensed content, but has developed relationships with major Japanese anime companies over the years. Today, it offers more than 50 percent of all newly-released one hour anime titles on its site, according to Gao. In the past, animes have typically run in Japan, then are licensed to television broadcasters in the US and other countries, then come out on DVD a year later. Crunchyroll instead broadcasts the titles on its site within an hour or so after they run in Japan, making itself an early way to for anime lovers to access new content.

We haven’t seen many content distributors get into social gaming in the way that Crunchyroll has. Perhaps the closest example are the RPGs that Lolapps has created to promote MMOs and console games from big gaming companies — an effort that seems to have gone well so far. We expect more content companies to experiment with social games in the future.

Thankfully, one of my favorite Ghostbusters news sources, Proton Charging, has saved me all the trouble of digging through old interviews in order to debunk all this mess.

Let’s start with the fact that she hasn’t even read the script. Combine that with the fact that not one of the other main Ghostbusters (or rights-holders to the franchise) are on the same page about what’s going on.

Oh yeah, and then there’s this little quote from Weaver that she gave MTV over a year ago,

“I would hope that my little Oscar would be one of the Ghostbusters even if I’m not in it!”

I’m not saying she’s wrong, I’m just saying it’s more likely that she’s behind around a year in her Ghostbusters news.

Now, on the Bill Murray as ghost nonsense.

Over four years ago (yes, four years ago) Harold Ramis was at the Austin Film Festival giving an interview, and as any questioning goes with someone that has had a nuclear accelerated strapped to their back (each pack’s energy cell has a half-life of 5000 years), things turned to Ghostbusters and the aspect of Ghostbusters 3.

Here’s what Spengler said, (after trying to drill a hole in his head)

“Murray’s so cantankerous, you know. Dan called him and said, ‘Would you be in the movie?’ And he said, ‘I’ll be in the movie… but only as a ghost.’“

While I would never put down Sigourney Weaver (you’re short, your bellybutton sticks out too far and you’re a terrible burden on your poor mother) for what she’s said, this is just a case of her talking about what she knows and since Ghostbusters 3 news has been floating around since 1989, I can’t really blame her for not know what’s really going on. I don’t even know what’s going on and I don’t have a 1 billion dollar movie to promote.

Also, things can’t be easy for her after smelling like barbecued dog hair. (Oh Venkman. Oh Venkman, I’m sorry.)

After all this Ghostbusters talk, I’m in the mood to watch some paranormal exterminating. Now, I just have to choose which one of the 4 DVD versions of the movie to watch.

If you’re not in the Ghostbusters DVD collecting business, don’t worry as you can head over to Crackle.com and watch Ghostbusters for free. If that’s still not enough, head over to Proton Charging and Ghostbusters Fans for more spectral supplements.

If that’s still not enough, go to rehab because you clearly have a problem (and I haven’t even told you about the Twinkie yet).

Like always, we’ll bring you any Ghostbusters 3 news, rumors or debunking as they come.

DVD Racks journal notes that anyone should see

Most college students, when they first enter their dorm rooms, are awed at the space that is all theirs. After a roommate also moves in, however, that space suddenly doesn’t look so large, and these simple dorm room decorating tips can help save space so that minds have the chance to expand.

Cleaning Out

The first step in space-saving dorm room decorating is whittling down what is actually in the room. Despite the recommended lists provided by decorating and accessory stores, most college students have no need for the extra set of sheets, snack table, or multiple dish sets, no matter what type of dorm room they are moving in to. If possible, preview the dorm room in person to learn whether a desk lamp, chair, or other furniture is provided, and avoid bringing duplicate materials. Another way to cut down on excess clutter is to coordinate with a roommate before moving in: most colleges will provide names and addresses for prospective roommates to get to know one another beforehand, and if one person is bringing a microwave, mini-fridge, or bulletin board, perhaps both roommates can use it. By cleaning out the excess provisions, that tiny dorm room will look just a bit bigger.

Other recommended items that might not be needed in a dorm room:

- Vacuum cleaner if the floors are tile
- Toaster or indoor grill if the campus does not allow heating appliances
- Bathroom cleaning supplies for dorms that use community bathrooms

Lofty Ambitions

One of the best ways to save space while still having a fabulous dorm room is to invest in a loft bed. Loft beds are essentially bunk beds without the bottom bunk, and they free up floor space for a chair, cushions, or bookshelf. Furthermore, loft beds can easily double as towel or coat racks, cutting down even further on furniture and clutter. Because of the space-saving nature of loft beds, some dorm rooms come equipped with them, while in others students will need to inform the campus housing department ahead of time that they are interested in a loft bed. The campus may have a specific provider they require students to use for space or safety concerns, or they may need advance notice to remove the standard bed from the room.

If a loft bed isn’t quite the right style, consider taking a set of heavy duty bed risers along with low-rise storage containers to take advantage of the space beneath the bed. Luggage, extra blankets, seasonal clothing, and extra school supplies can easily be stored under a bed.

Crates are Great

Milk crates are a staple dorm room decorating fixture in nearly every college and university. Available in a wide range of colors and sizes, these plastic cubes are the perfect storage vessel: they can hold items neatly or jumbled, and because they have cutouts it is easy to identify the contents. They are sturdy enough to be used to make shelves, stools, or nightstands. Depending on the crates’ design, it may even be able to hold file folders for efficiently organizing notes, papers, and research. If students aren’t interested in designer versions, ask local grocers if they are willing to part with a few industrial crates. They aren’t as pretty, but they serve the same purpose.

If milk crates aren’t appealing, many discount stores offer wooden cubes that can be organized into a variety of different fixtures, from nightstands and wall units to desk hutches and bookshelves. The cubes may be equipped with drawers, doors, or interior shelves, and though they are more expensive than crates, their versatility can easily be transferred to a first home or apartment as well as other dorm rooms.

Hooking Up

One of the least used spaces in dorm room decorating is the walls. Sure, posters and pictures are great personal touches, but when space is at a premium that area is best used for practical storage. Screw-in or adhesive hooks can be used to augment a tiny closet and are a perfect place for keys, purses, or backpacks. Over-the-door hooks are another hot campus commodity: they can be used for coats, pajamas, clothes, or other gear on a dorm room door. There are also a variety of over-the-door hanging shelves made from wire and fabric that can drastically increase storage space for light items such as towels, shoes, or clothing.

Other items that can easily go on hooks to save space:

- Hats
- Mugs
- Headphones
- Laundry Bag
- Photographs

Footing the Problem

Another clever dorm room decorating idea that saves space is to use luggage that can double as decorative storage items, such as a footlocker. There are many styles of locker available, including those with wheels for easy mobility. Other variations are actually cubes, allowing them to fit in smaller spaces, and they often have pictures on the sides to add flair to a dorm room.

Many other types of luggage can double as useful items in a dorm room. Duffle bags, especially military surplus designs, make rugged laundry bags, while sturdy boxes can be quickly covered with a spare blanket or rug for a unique nightstand or small table.

Small Solutions

As college students take more items with them to school – personal computers were unheard of when their parents were in college – dorm rooms continue to shrink, and every inch of space matters. These small dorm room decorating tips may not save much space on their own, but added together they can create a spacious atmosphere in the smallest dorm.

- Use bulletin boards on the wall for photographs instead of standing frames on precious desk space.
- Declutter a desk with an organizer, perhaps one that is built into a personal desk lamp.
- Don’t get tangled up in cords: use a wireless mouse and keyboard for a desktop computer, or invest in a space-saving laptop.
- Use a hanging wall file for assignments, letters, and other paperwork to keep it from getting lost or accidentally trashed.
- Leave CD and DVD cases at home and use a portable carrier with individual sleeves instead.

The best dorm room decorating tip of all: keep it small! If any item isn’t used frequently, the chances are it won’t be missed too badly if it isn’t in a dorm room. By cleaning out what isn’t needed and taking advantage of every inch of space, whether it’s with a loft bed, hooks, or reusing luggage, a dorm room can be both stylish and functional without being overcrowded.
