I’d be surprised to see a modern notebook without a built-in wireless adapter. However, it is possible that this computer doesn’t have one. If it doesn’t, that doesn’t necessarily mean your friend can’t connect to the Internet wirelessly. Obviously, as is, that wouldn’t be possible but if you invest in a wireless card, USB adapter, or dongle, the problem will be solved.

You’ll need to first see what type of ports the notebook has available such as PCI ports and USB ports. While PCI ports used to be fairly standard on laptops, not all will have them. Most will have USB ports, so you’re likely safe going with a USB adapter or USB Internet dongle.

Adapters vs. Dongles

Whether you choose a wireless adapter or dongle depends on how your friend will be using the computer for Internet access. For example, does your friend currently have a wireless home network? If so, a wireless adapter allows for connecting to the wireless network and accessing the Internet wirelessly over that network. On the other hand, if your friend doesn’t currently have a network or Internet access, a USB dongle might be the better choice. Internet dongles are more like wireless modems that you use to connect to an ISP wirelessly.

In either case, going with a USB wireless adapter or dongle is an option when a notebook computer is not equipped with built-in wireless.

Sony has released the world’s first handycam with interchangeable lenses codenamed as NEX-VG10. This Camcorder features 1080p video recording (up to 24Mbps), had it has been equipped with a high end Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone, which consist of 4 microphones that could do stereo mix.

This Sony NEX-VG-10 handycam has got a great Exmor HD sensor, which mean it can record film like video and the image quality produced with this sensor is very amazing.

Other features also include 3.0-inch LCD with sharp 921,000-dot resolution, 14MP lens for capturing still images, and it has come with an Sony 18-200mm lens.

Sony NEX-VG10 HD camcorder will be available in this September for $2000 at least.

[Press Release]

Sony has launched the first prosumer interchangeable lens HD camcorder, the NEX-VG10. In many ways, this is a development of their NEX series of cameras; in fact it uses the same 14.6MP Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor. The dedicated camcorder, however, is capable of recording full 1920 x 1080 HD video at 24mbps. Additionally, the NEX-VG10 features a “Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone” which uses advanced processing algorithms to combine signals from four individual microphone capsules to provide better channel separation.

Following is a press release from Sony about the new camera.

Press Release.
San Diego, 13 June 2010.

Following the 25th anniversary of its industry-leading Handycam product line, Sony today announced the innovative NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Camcorder. The new NEX-VG10 is the world's first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses and the first Handycam camcorder to feature an extra-large ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor.

“The NEX-VG10 takes Sony's Handycam line to the next level by allowing unprecedented artistic expression that isn't possible with conventional consumer video cameras,” said Andy Bubala, director of Sony's camcorder business. “With this camcorder, video enthusiasts and photographers can now capture cinematic full HD movies and premium stereo sound.”

Sony's NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Handycam Camcorder is equipped with the same ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor used in the “NEX-5″ and “NEX-3″ digital cameras and compatible with the high grade “E-mount” series of smaller, lighter lenses optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF. It is also compatible with a wealth of “A-mount” interchangeable lenses used by Sony's existing alpha DSLR camera lineup via a mount adapter (sold separately), including award winning Sony G Lenses and Carl Zeiss branded lenses.

Coupled with Sony's powerful BIONZ processor, the camcorder's ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor realizes high resolution video and 14 megapixel still images. Approximately 19.5 times bigger than the standard sensor found in conventional camcorders, the APS HD CMOS sensor enables an extremely shallow depth of field. This allows videographers to achieve cinematic results with stunning background defocus (bokeh). Users can also enjoy DSLR-quality photo capture with features like Auto HDR, Handheld Twilight, and Anti Motion Blur, as well as catch fast action sequences with a continuous burst rate of up to seven fps.

The NEX-VG10 can capture full 1920×1080 high definition video at up to 24Mbps for amazing clarity and detail, ideal for recording on to Blu-ray DiscTM media. It also comes with an E-mount 18-200mm lens optimized for video shooting that offers a powerful 11x optical zoom in addition to a silent auto-focus system and Optical SteadyshotTM image stabilization with Active Mode for superior versatility.

Satisfying the needs of serious videographers, sound quality matches the stellar imaging performance of the NEX-VG10. Its Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone uses advanced processing algorithms to combine signals from four individual microphone capsules. The result is exceptionally clear stereo audio with high directional response, allowing videographers to capture more sound from their subject and less background noise. The camcorder also features dedicated inputs for optional external microphones and headphones to monitor sound levels.

The camcorder's TruBlackTM technology brings remarkably higher contrast and brightness to its 3.0″ Xtra Fine LCDTM swivel display, delivering more natural, realistic colors and easier viewing in bright conditions. The LCD is supplemented by a high-resolution adjustable electronic viewfinder that helps framing, monitoring and capturing clear images.

Compact and easy to handle, the NEX-VG10 gives videographers the flexibility of a removable lens with the ergonomics and operability of a Handycam camcorder. An intuitive jog dial and hotkeys make it easy to navigate menus and adjust shooting parameters, including full manual control of Iris, Shutter Speed, Gain and White Balance for professional results.

Dual accessory shoes (Alpha Hot Shoe/Universal Cold Shoe) allow for many still photography and video accessories, such as the ECM-CG50 shotgun microphone and external flash lighting. There's also a choice of rechargeable battery options, including the NP-FV100 that provides up to 315 minutes of continuous HD shooting (may vary), and a specially designed soft carrying case.

Included with purchase as a download voucher, Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 video editing software includes powerful tools for video compositing, color correction and sound mixing to produce cinema-quality HD movies with ease. You can also share your creations via DVD, Blu-ray DiscTM media, or upload to the web all from one simple program.

The NEX-VG10 accepts both Memory Stick PRO DuoTM (including Memory Stick PRO-HG DuoTM) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media. Users can record up to four hours of high definition footage (1920×1080, FH mode) when using the 32GB memory card.

Sony's Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX offers an industry leading 30MB per second transfer rate, which means Handycam users can upload video clips in a fraction of actual playback time.

Great review. Much more professional than the one you guys responded to. Your reviewers are also much more personable than many other tech review sites. I can take Mr. Nibler much more seriously than CNET’s Dan Ackerman. Thanks for the review.

Splitting the difference. Satisfying the niche. Exploiting an opportunity. All of those phrases could be used to accurately describe what HP has done here with the new EliteBook 8440w. It's one of the smaller options in the expanding EliteBook family, yet also one of the most powerful. That's not a combination you hear of very often. In most circumstances, you'll need a larger machine in order to accommodate more powerful components within, mostly because the more powerful components emit more heat than the lower-end components. Hewlett-Packard, however, has managed to get a Core i7 Mobile processor within the frame of a 14″ notebook and still keep the heat under control. What we're left with is an extremely unique machine that has fewer competitive alternatives…

    Game Review: Foto Showdown

I taken Pictures in the last months - please tell me when you like them:

Foto Showdown is a camera based monster battle game exclusively on the Nintendo DSi where the dominant colors of your camera subject determine the monster you spawn to do battle in a Pokémon type duel.

    Ratings:
    Graphics & Audio: 12/25,
    Gameplay: 8/25,
    Creativity 10/25,
    Fun 10/25

    Total: 40/100

Foto Showdown is a truly unique idea taken to an inexplicably bad product with the only saving grace that it actually works as a dueling monster game. Taking photos and having the dominant colors spawn or determine the various monsters you use in duels is a great idea if it worked correctly.

Foto Showdown has two main parts in taking pictures for your monster management and the actual battles against either another player using the wireless play or against the AI of the game. Either way you have to start out using something to contain your monster which they term bullets and you have to start off with the basic ones and progress to better ones as you get deeper into the game.

The first thing you get is a basic camera and basic bullets to contain your monster and simply take a picture of something to have the game give you your first monster. You then battle against another person or the AI in a card duel where your monster has abilities and depending on how you use them against your opponent in the turn based fights determines the winner.

The dueling is almost exactly like many other card based battle games and not original at all with the same magic and physical abilities for attack and defense. The game is almost identical in the duel with Pokémon and plays very well for a game that is fun if your into these turn based battles.

The main difference between Foto Showdown and Pokémon is no wandering around finding monsters to fight with, you snap pictures of anything and have the game give you them according to colors, supposedly. I really do not think the color recognition system works well from the start and if you want a camera based game to catch someone's fancy from the start it needs to work from the very first shutter click.

If the game does not prove it can give you different monsters from the start you will not have much reason to stick around to see if things improve or are any different. I found that going further into the game seemed to only mean I acquired higher level monsters and the picture color recognition did not seem to matter.

When you have played awhile, if you can stand to, you will acquire better camera devices that will take better pictures according to the game and the upgraded bullets will allow you to acquire better monsters. In fact this system does not work nearly as well as the creators would have hoped because your first monster dealings will probably sour you on the whole concept and just frustrate you with the game.

There does not appear to be any rhyme nor reason for the monster choice when taking pictures, as a test I took pictures of a plain white backdrop I normally use for photos and got a Wyvern three times in a row. I then switched to a black background and got a Wyvern as well, I then tried a bright green piece of plastic and did get something different but when I switched to a red background I got the same Kuras.

I'm not sure if the color means much as using three very different colors with the whole screen being filled with that color under bright photo lights made no difference on the monster it gave me. While this may change further along in the game it is a shame they did not ensure this worked right from the start as taking pictures of different things in the beginning and getting different monsters is an important part of gameplay and value.

If I don't get at least some explanation that things will change further along in the game or actually see this from testing I am going to be pretty frustrated going around snapping pictures of things and not getting any variety to my choices of monsters. Right off the bat my value and gameplay longevity is out the window as I really am not trusting that things will only improve with more time I spend on Foto Showdown.

Aside from the photo stuff the game does work and you do get the full monster battle, albeit a Pokémon copy, that works just fine but the main taking pictures to get monsters just fails. When the game is promoted as “Battle using Nintendo DSi Camera!” you get a little excited that they finally have come up with some kind of actual use for the lower quality camera on the handheld.

The truth is it just does not seem to work all that well and if there is no real indication that it works well than you start the game off being disappointed. Other things also disappoint and bring your initial opinion down like no touch screen in the game at all, even for name choice.

I found this an exceptionally odd thing to advertise this as a Nintendo DS exclusive game and not even use the touch screen from starting the game up to shutting it down. The controls for using your monsters and camera all worked fine using the various buttons and D-pad but without the touch screen you again have that feeling of something being missing.

Gameplay is fine for the battles and you do have a good time while there but without being able to control what monsters you get other than to just keep plugging away at battles to win more monsters it feels aimless. Foto Showdown works well for the Pokémon type battles with video and audio also working well but when the game is exclusive to the Nintendo DSi because the game is based on the camera you expect that to actually work.

The game starts off being a disappointment with no actual proof the camera actually makes any difference in taking pictures of various things or just your floor. I had great expectations, or at least some, that this would be an interesting game and that the camera would finally see some use other than snapping pictures of my cat lying on my keyboard before I toss him back on the floor.

Foto Showdown only gives a bit of a different card battle duel type game in a different package that actually copies the Pokémon battles well. Foto Showdown is a letdown and if you're expecting a great game using the DSi you may be disappointed in the use of the camera but the base battles work well and are fun.

p2pnet view Movies:- Japan’s NEC says it’s come up with a new technology “capable of accurately detecting the illegal copies of video contents or their altered versions uploaded to the internet in just a few seconds”.

Apparently “it can manage to do so by generating a compact signature or fingerprint of 76 bytes of size per frame of the original content and comparing them with the video content on the internet”, says Akihabara News.

“That means, for instance, any screener or camcorder movie copies will be detected by either the producers or service providers fast and easy”, says the story.

According to NEC, “the technology succeeded %96 of detection rate with low false alarm rate of 5ppm (5 in one million) during the tests conducted by international standardization organization (ISO)”, says the story, adding:

“And the technology is already accepted as part of the MPEG-7 standard.”

The auld grey heads who run the corporate entertainment cartels will be having wet dreams.

    But maybe not.

Many, if not most, screeners, working copies and other closely held materials end up online only after they’ve been posted there by Hollywood insiders.

    Hmmmm. Could be tricky.

Meanwhile, the full release is below >>>

Tokyo, May 7, 2010 – NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced today the development of a video content identification technology that detects illegal copies of video content uploaded to the Internet in a matter of seconds.

This technology generates a fingerprint (video signature) to identify video content then compares video signatures to the signatures of original content in order to detect copies or altered versions. Therefore, altered video content, such as caption overlays, camera captured copies and analog copies, can be quickly and accurately detected.

This new technology enables content holders and service providers to automatically detect illegal copies and prevent illegal upload of video content on the Internet by registering original video content. These developments are expected to significantly reduce the time and cost of manual content inspections as well as improve the scale and accuracy of content assessment.

This technology has been approved by the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 (*1) as the MPEG-7 Video signature tool (*2), international standard for video identification.

These video content identification technologies feature the following:

Accurate detection of copied or altered video content
Video signatures are extracted for each frame based on differences in the luminance between sets of sub-regions on a frame that are defined by a variety of locations, sizes, and shapes. Video signatures represent a unique fingerprint that can be individually detected frame by frame. This technology is capable of accurately detecting video content with that was created with such editing operations as analog capturing (*3), re-encoding (*4) and caption overlay (*5), which was conventionally very difficult to detect.

A high detection rate and low false positive rate for all video contents
By estimating confidence of signatures generated from each frame and using the confidence for sequence identification, the technology achieves a high detection rate (*6) with a very low false positive rate (*7). These technologies achieved an average detection rate of 96% at a very low false alarm rate of 5ppm (5 in one million) through tests conducted by the international standardization organization.

    Detection of short video scenes
Due to the high identification capability of signatures, the technology is capable of accurately detecting video scenes as short as 2 seconds (60 frames), which was formerly impossible when using conventional methods.

    Compatibility with home PCs
By designing a compact signature size of 76 bytes per frame, the storage memory required for the matching process is minimized. As a result, a home-class PC (*8) can match approximately 1,000 hours of video in 1 second.
Due to the proliferation of video distribution services on the Internet, the detection and deletion of illegally distributed and copied video content (copyright infringement) has become a crucial issue for content holders and service providers. This problem has conventionally been addressed by manual inspection which is incapable of accurately tracking the constantly growing volume of Internet content. In order to solve this issue, various automatic detection tools have been proposed, such as digital watermarks where content is embedded with special code, and the use of image retrieval technology. However, it was prohibitively difficult to accurately inspect large databases, short content or video produced through various editing operations. These new technologies resolve each of the above issues.

Looking forward, NEC will further develop this technology in order to provide a variety of applications that establish a content distribution structure where all video rights are respected.

This technology was approved as the Final Draft of International Standard of ISO/IEC 15938-3/Amd.4 at the 92nd ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 WG11 (MPEG) meeting held in Dresden, Germany from April 19 to 23, 2010. The standard is expected to be published in September 2010, following approval from ITTF member countries.

This newly developed technology will be demonstrated at the 13th Embedded System Expo at Tokyo Bigsite between May 12 and 14.

    Stay tuned.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer

    June 17th, 2010 by brucesteele1956

I made new Images in the last months - please tell me your thoughts:

    Vogel - Bird by BlaM4c

The costs associated with throwing a wedding and reception can be overwhelming for couples, especially during a recession. One of the big ticket items for a wedding is the photographer. Couples usually pay one photographer to handle their still frame wedding pictures and a videographer to handle the filming of their wedding and reception. The sum of these two services can easily surpass $2,000 for even modest weddings. If your wedding budget can't handle this expense then there are ways that you can get your photos without having to spend huge amounts of money.

    Photographing Your Wedding

You have several wedding photo options available to you if you are working with a small wedding budget. Your first option is to have your guests take photographs for you. For this option you can hand out disposable cameras to your guests and ask them to take snap shots as the wedding and reception progresses. Another option that you have is to ask your guests to bring their own digital cameras to the wedding to take photos. They can then upload their images to a photo printing website, like Kodak.com or Winkflash.com, where guests and the wedding couple can select the images to have printed out.

Another option that you have for your wedding photos is to have a friend or relative take pictures for you. This is a great option if you know a photographer who is willing to give you their services as your wedding gift. You can also ask around to see if there is a good quality digital or film camera that they can borrow for your wedding.

Students of photography also make a great option for inexpensive wedding photographs. You can negotiate with the student to handle your wedding photographs in exchange for a lower fee than a professional photographer would charge. The student could then use copies of your photos to develop their portfolio which would help them to get more wedding gigs.

    Filming Your Wedding

Filming your wedding is another cost that you can reduce by enlisting the help of your friends and family. Your first option is to ask someone with a video camera to film your wedding for you. This can be their gift to you, or you can cover the cost of the video tape or DVD. If you want multiple angles then you can have a couple of friends film your wedding and reception for you.

Another option that you have is to borrow web cams from your friends and family members and set these up around the wedding and reception venues. You can then record your wedding from these various angles and also have the video images play live online. This will allow people who were not able to attend your wedding or reception to join in your celebration.

So here we have a group of people who not only believe they have the right to ride their bikes in public completely naked, but that they have the right to forbid anyone from photographing it.

    Talk about arrogant.

World Naked Bike Ride, an international organization that promotes naked protests against the use of cars, has even gone as far as implementing a “photography policy” as they go around breaking indecent exposure laws.

Below is a sample of their policy when dealing with photographers in public.

    • If it makes you uncomfortable, let the photographers know that they don’t have permission to photograph you.
    • Some rides might want to consider having a rolling start. Some have said that it’s fun to start off clothed and then, once riders are away from the assembly area and crowds, they can undress. This has been done in Vancouver and Chicago.
    • Everybody should take responsibility for making people feel comfortable and informing others (who might be unaware) of the photo/video policy.
    • Consider appointing a photography patrol to educate photographers about the policy. Most people will be respectful of policy once they are informed. Always assume good intent unless there is good reason to believe otherwise.
    • Consider prohibiting photography/video taking place in designated areas. Eg: in 2005, Seattle photographers and film-makers were prohibited from shooting closer than 15 feet from subjects. The problem is of course, that some have long lenses!
    • Tents, domes, shelters and screens: Consider prohibiting photography inside body-painting tent areas without permission from those being painted.
    • Consider issuing IDs to photographers and film-makers that you have a good relationship with, and that understand your policy.
    • Be prepared to directly confront predatory photographers if they have been warned or are actingly in blatantly disrespectful ways. Turn the tables on problem people by photographing them and posting their image on your website for the public to see. Often this will discourage them from shooting irresponsibly. There are also those who are at the event to use the images for other reasons, and you won’t know without asking. If someone is being aggressive, acting suspiciously, or making you feel uncomfortable, please tell a WNBR team coordinator or someone who can ask them to back off and give people personal space.

I find it pretty laughable as does the San Francisco Citizen; especially the ones where they’re going to get off on telling me I “don’t have permission” to photograph them.

Or the one about the “photography patrol” that would “educate” me about photographing them in public.

Having said all that, I didn’t even bother photographing the naked bike protest that rode through Miami last week.

My experience with these types of protests is that they are filled with scraggly looking white men rather than hot looking women.

This article on wedding photography tips will help alleviate any concerns you may have as that big day approaches. The use of a digital camera offers an amateur photographer a great opportunity to achieve success in wedding photography. While it is always a good idea to leave your wedding photography to a trained professional, these wedding photography tips and other resources will make the best of your big day. How often is it when your friends and family surround you in celebration?

Below are some wedding photography tips to help ensure the pictures you receive are of the highest quality and the entire event is a success.

    - Understand the quality of your camera and its flash. Reread the owner’s manual and do some online research. This will make you aware of any limitations your equipment has in different lighting situations.

    - Another photography tip for your wedding is to be aware of your surroundings when you are taking the photos. More often than not, amateur photographers focus completely on the subject without taking a look at the negative space behind and around the subject. Is there a lot of clutter? Is there too much activity and distraction that will be included in your picture if you snap and shoot now? Try to find a place where your subjects have calm, unobtrusive backgrounds and your wedding photographs will be filled with success.

    - Another wedding tip is to be aware of the glare from eyeglasses. The glare from eyeglasses can cause a big bright spot in your photo and make your subject unrecognizable. But remember that all that is needed is a simple adjustment to your subject’s pose. Instead of removing the glasses, he or she will simply need to move their head down and to the side until the glare has subsided.

    - After all the pomp and circumstance of the wedding ceremony, the reception offers a great time to capture successful wedding photographs. Think about all the great things that happen once every one loosens up, the cutting of the wedding cake, the throwing of the wedding bouquet, and the little kids all dressed up and running around make for great moments to take pictures. Of all the wedding photography tips to help guarantee success, this is a key one.

These wedding photography tips will help you achieve success the next time you are called upon to capture that lucky couple’s special day.

    Sony VAIO VGN-S260 Review

    June 10th, 2010 by brucesteele1956

Eric Clapton @ NEC Birmingham by Sparks68

Sony doesn't really make powerhouse computers, but seriously with this system at it's price could of been a lot nicer.  I know what you all are thinking.  This is going to be some hate review that busts on this poor machine, but it's not.  I just want to let everyone know what they are in store for when they purchase this notebook.  Sony is one of the leading manufacturer's of electronics, and computers are definitely one of there high points now a days.  The look is what catches most people's eyes when they first see a Sony Computer.  First things first.  The thin and light feel of the S260 is what makes this a nice system.  At a little over 4 pounds, you can't go wrong.  Now with this light feel to it, comes the limited hardware.  How much hardware do you think this system can handle with it's 4 pound base?  The S260 lacks graphics, so any gamer would have a very hard time playing games on even the lowest settings.  This wouldn't be the kind of computer you would want to give your highly active gamer of a grandson, let's put it that way.  If you are going to college or a new job, this is probably a good machine for that, as it runs on a Pentium M processor at 1.7 GHZ, which is very good for this chipset.  Of course with the lighter laptops that feature the Centrino or Mobile technology, comes complete with a four hour minimum battery life, which happens to be great for anyone traveling, etc.  Taking a look at the graphics though, really disappoints me.  32 MB of video RAM is horrible and embarassing.  Computers over five years ago had this amount of RAM, and even though this machine wasn't built for the high end gamer, 64 could of been the minimum.  At 1280 x 800 resolution, there is not much to view on the 13 inch widescreen.  Sure the visuals are nice when you are using Native Resolution, but don't get overly excited, because at 114 pixels per inch at 32 MB's isn't too shabby.  Watching a movie, or just using the computer at it's minimum is fine, but anything over active would be too much for the S260.  Going into the sound very briefly.  Sony didn't do too bad on there speakers.  The sound doesn't distort when you turn it up loud.  It just lacks some bass, so if you want to put some boom into the music, this wouldn't work too well.  Connections are simple, yet some are available that aren't for most lightweight computers.  The S260 features two USB 2.0 ports, a 56 K modem, and an Ethernet port, that all come covered for protection when purchased.  The S260 comes prebuilt with one PCI Card slot, which normally is limited to two, but is limited to one this time, which was kind of weird.  The laptop comes with a Firewire port, which is very nice.  A lot of laptops do not have Firewire capability, which add's points to the S260.  Another neat entertainment feature is the six pin port that allows you to connect a camcorder or such to it, so digital editing, etc is not a problem.  I liked this a lot, and it really made me look at this system.  The system ships with XP Home Edition, which in my opinion is the weaker version of professional, but that's just me.  Home just doesn't give me the kind of condition I like in an OS, so Professional should have been the main OS.  A top point that gives Sony a great reputation is the service they offer.  I don't care what anybody says, Sony is probably the best in service.  Dell really didn't too well in the service field, Compaq or HP has limited service, but Sony is just great.  You can call up customer service, and they will have an answer for you every time.  I like that in Sony, and always have, so keep up the good work there.  Getting back to hardware information, the S260 is prebuilt with a RAM slot filled with 512 MB of RAM backed by a 333 MHZ bus.  That is pretty nice in a system like this, as there really isn't a lot of power to use.  At 1.7 GHZ, you can't really burn out a machine like this, so there is more than enough RAM in this baby to get you going where you need to go.  Average processor speed for a Pentium M processor is 1.5 GHZ, and the leading brand goes up to around 2.0 GHZ, with that not being really needed with 512 MB of RAM backing you up, it still makes some sort of difference.  1.7 GHZ is fine for the Sony S260, and I didn't see any problems when running the OS, and any programs along with it.  All in all the S260 is a nice system set packed for the average computer user.  If you want to play games, I highly recommend another system, but if you are off to college, or using this for work or just an around the house laptop, this is a machine fit for you.  7 out 10 is my rating for this.

Say what you like about Apple, without the Cupertino company we'd probably still have been using beige computers until that other style-conscious company, Sony, entered the fray.

But thanks to the greater attention paid to design these days, we're rewarded with laptops like this distinctly snazzy model from Samsung. It won't suit everyone, but it's certainly eye-catching, using the same semi-transparent red patterned plastic on its lid that Samsung has pioneered on many of its tellies and the Jet mobile phone. It looks good, with its bold Samsung white logo sitting off-centre and its sculpted edges. The makers claim it's a durable, scratch-resistant finish, which we're inclined to believe, even if it does show finger marks and smudges pretty easily.

Less successful is the way the machine is weighted. Stick your thumb under the lip to open the laptop and you'll find you need to hold the lower part of the case down with your other hand to stop the whole thing tipping up. This is a shame, but once you've lifted the lid, things get better. The same subtle swirly pattern covers the entire surface. Well, not the keys, obviously, or you'd never see what you were typing, but including the mouse rocker button. Not every manufacturer of colour-chassis laptops includes the mouse buttons and it looks a lot better here. There are other cute details like the big Pocket-lint symbol, or power switch as we used to call it, in the top right corner.

The touchpad blends in pretty easily, but is slightly more matte than the glossy surround. And to make sure you can find it, there is a tiny blue light at each corner, which isn't as tacky as it sounds. The lights are discreet and only stay on for a matter of seconds after you've finished using the touchpad which, by the way, has the multi-touch feature that makes it easy to scroll through a document by swiping two fingers up, down or across the pad.

This laptop has a 15.6-inch screen, a curious in-between size if you ask me. It's certainly big enough for desktop use, but if you're not going to move it around much, you might prefer a bigger display still. On the other hand, it's just too big and heavy to be comfortably carted about a lot. The glam styling may make you feel it's worth the lug. The size does mean there's room for an extended keyboard, which you'll be glad of when you're using a spreadsheet.

Those plentiful keys are well-spaced and well-sprung, though decent rather than outstanding for extended typing.

Speed is great, thanks to the 2.13GHz Intel Core i3-330M processor which launches and runs programs very happily and is good enough for gaming, too, not least thanks to the Nvidia GeForce N11P-GE graphics card with 512MB is dedicated graphics memory and 4GB of RAM. And you won't run out of space too quickly either - the hard drive is capacious enough at 500GB to please the most demanding user.

Mind you, you'll need to angle the screen just right before you start. The widescreen glossy model is highly reflective and while the LED-backlit picture is perfectly adequate, it won't blow your ocular socks off, with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

And Samsung didn't stint on connectivity, either, including the now commonplace HDMI out socket and four USB connections including eSATA and a chargeable socket to refuel your phone or other gizmo, without having the computer on. Plus VGA and the other usual suspects.

Sound is decidedly average, even if the little speaker grilles look neat with their chrome central bar. Sound is probably the weakest link, though, in what is a stylish, effective and speedy machine. What's more, it's very good value.

    Verdict

So you want a laptop you can show off, that has a classy and attractive look to it? But you don't want to sacrifice power or pay over the odds? Look no further. Samsung's hefty machine may not be feather-light, but it's solid, efficient and worth its asking price.
